Facts About Colostrum

Colostrum is a nutrient rich supplement with many healing properties.

After mammals give birth, colostrum, often called the first milk or pre-milk, is released by the mammary glands for about 72 hours (1). Bovine colostrum on the market comes from cows’ first milk .

  • Lactoferrin which is a protein that supports the immune system and defends against infections
  • Growth factors such as IGF-1 (Insulin Like Growth Factor), EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) and TGF (Transforming Growth Factor), FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor) which stimulate healthy growth
  • Immunoglobulins like IgA, IgG, and IgM to support the immune system

What About Bovine Colostrum Side Effects?

Colostrum has minimal side effects however, for about 20% of people, they may get a mild Herxheimer reaction like  fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and headache. These reactions should only last a couple of days and cutting back on the colostrum for a few days and slowly increasing the dose is recommended.

I always recommend starting at a low dose and increase as tolerated.

Can Someone Take Colostrum with a Lactose Intolerance?

If a client has a milk allergy, they may need to be cautious of colostrum. Many people with just sensitivities to milk may be able to tolerate colostrum but start slow.

Colostrum For Leaky Gut

Leaky gut or intestinal permeability happens when there are spaces in the tight junctions in the gut lining and this may allow undigested food, toxins, bad bacteria or parasites to get into the tissues.

A study in 2021 reviewed the use of bovine colostrum in various gastrointestinal diseases including IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) and infectious diarrhea and showed evidence of efficacy for mucosal healing (15).

Colostrum For Skin

A study in 2022 examined bovine colostrum exosomes on UV damaged skin and found improved production of collagen (16).

Another study in 2021, showed liposomal colostrum applied topically reduced the rate of telomere erosion and enhanced skin health (17)

Colostrum Powder vs. Colostrum Caps

Colostrum comes in powder or capsule form. I prefer the liposomal powder form as it coats the gut after consumption and promotes gut healing. A powder can also be used topically for skin benefits.

Best Colostrum Supplement

Sovereign Labs has a bovine colostrum with liposomal delivery for better absorption. It is taken from the first milk after the calf meets its needs. The colostrum is free of antibiotics, hormones and is naturally gluten free.

The colostrum powder allows you to customize the dose and use topically if needed.

Immunoglobulins vs. Colostrum

Whole colostrum provides more components than a serum derived immunoglobulin supplement however, the immunoglobulin supplement may be better for someone with a severe dairy allergy.

Best Time to Take Colostrum

It is best to take bovine colostrum in between meals on an empty stomach to allow the colostrum to reach the gut quickly for maximum absorption.

Colostrum Testimonials

Many clients have expressed their positive experiences with bovine colostrum.

Some clients have seen improved gut health and others have used topically to improve skin health.
